Universal Audio’s Pultec Pro Legacy plug-in combines the Pultec MEQ-5 Midrange Equalizer and the Pultec EQP-1A Program Equalizer, two of the most sought-after hardware EQs, into a single plug-in. The Pultec MEQ-5 Midrange Equalizer has been out of production for some time, and is the ultimate compliment to the Pultec EQP-1A. The MEQ-5 EQ section allows you to boost and cut midrange bands with the same silky smoothness and personality of the original hardware. Either EQ section can be enabled or disabled separately, saving DSP power. And like the EQP-1A, the MEQ-5 was meticulously modeled with all of the attention to detail you expect from Universal Audio. As close as it get's when i installed UAD's Pultec pro eq i really noticed the difference with other plugins that claimed to be something like the original Pultec eq.In the past when analog was king i used to work in a recording studio recording some of the most important hits that populated the charts in my country Colombia and many other countries in the world. At the time we used tu burn laquers as a final master of our mix i always liked to play with the pultec eq to correct poor eqs and give some weight to the mixes in question,it was allways a wonderfull tool to get results. Now days almost 30 years later i found the same feeling in UAD's Pultec Pro.its as close as it get's to analog feel in the digital domain.excellent tool to fix and warm up saggy mixes.
The PE 1C is a passive, all-tube EQ, based on the classic PULTEC EQP 1A design and featuring a passive EQ section and a high quality op amp. With the original Pultec out of production for decades and used examples demanding sky-high prices, the PE 1C is by far the easiest way to achieve this unique and coveted sound. The PE 1C low end section combines two separate passive EQ filters with slightly different cut/boost frequencies. When the two sections are combined, this results in truly unique EQ curves, often named the “Low End Trick” and very useful for cleaning up low/mid frequencies. The high frequency and midrange bands really stand out in terms of transparency and clarity, and the PE 1C is broadly regarded as one of the world’s finest passive tube based equalizers.
Gabriel Roth, Co- Owner, Chief Engineer and Producer, Daptone Studios, Broklyn, NY Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, The Budos Band, Naomi Shelton 'There are very few pieces of outboard gear that I depend on, and very few audio company's that I trust. However, anyone that's worked with me at Daptone Studios can testify that the dominant color of my humble outboard rack is Tube-Tech blue. I have grown to depend heavily on their PE1C and ME1B equalizers for their unique musicality.
I am able to distinctly reshape drums, horns, vocals, orchestral tracks, or even entire mixes without making them sound effected or cappy. I can honestly say that I depend more heavily on Tube-Tech than on any other outboard gear.
I endorse their products with confidence.' .
Tube based push-pull amplifier. Freq. @ -3 dB: 5 Hz - 40 kHz. Low noise: 60 dB @ 10 kHz. All-tube passive EQ. 4 LF frequencies: 20, 30, 60 and 100 Hz (Boost: 0 to +14 dB, attenuation: 0 to -18 dB).
10 HF boosts with variable bandwidth: 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 and 16 kHz (0 to +18 dB w/ sharp Q, 0 to 10 dB w/ broad Q). 3 HF attenuations: 5, 10 and 20 kHz (0 to -18 dB). Input impedance: 600Ω. No insertion loss.
Clickless In/Out switch. Conductive plastic potentiometers. In- and output are transformer balanced and fully floating. The TUBE-TECH PE1C is a passive tube based program equalizer based on the design of the old PULTEC EQP1A, featuring an all passive eq section and a high quality op amp. All components used are of the highest standard.
The TUBE-TECH PE 1C Program Equalizer contains a low frequency boost and attenuation section (shelving), and a high frequency boost section (peaking). The high frequency section has variable bandwidth as well as attenuation (shelving). The filter section is of the passive type followed by a tube based push-pull amplifier to restore the gain.
Input and output are transformer balanced as well as fully floating. Input and output transformers come with a static screen between the primary and secondary wirings. 'The Tube-Tech program EQ PE1A is exactly the same as Pultec program EQ!' This was our message when promoting the very first Tube-Tech equalizer back in 1985. The Tube-Tech PE1A program equalizer was originally made as a European exact equivalent of the US Pultec program eq EQP1A, that became very popular in the US during the eighties in recording studios in New York and LA. The smooth sound of the Pultecs made these eq's very different and attractive. The challenge of this illusive sound motivated Tube Tech founder and designer John Petersen to design and manufacture something that sounded just excately the same, featuring equal specs for all components.
The magic test was mixing with Pultec EQ1PA on the left channel and Tube Tech PE1A on the right channel and check the stereo image: It had to remain perfect on all settings! The PE1A was the first product carrying the TUBE-TECH name 28 years ago. Today the Tube-Tech PE1C is still in production, with little changes in sound from its original design. Sound: The PE1C is one of the very few program eq that does exactly the same thing as the original Pultecs did when new. We write 'did' because today the Pultecs often are more 'grainy' sounding today due to age and very old components.
The high end boost of the PE1C is a one off a kind and nothing comes close. Try it on dark sources like a Coles ribbon mike and hear how nice the top end gets opened up without harshness. The sound obtained with the PE1C is impossible to get with other standard active eq's due to the filter types, the tube gain stages and transformers. There's a lot of creative possibilities and magic hidden in this seemingly simple eq: The low end section is a combination of two separate passive eq filters with a little different cut/boost frequencies, even though the front panel shows the same frequencies for these functions. In reality the boost frequencies are a little lower than the attenuation frequencies, something the original Pultecs did and the Tube Tech carries over.

'THE LOW END TRICK' This feature results in special eq curves when the two sections are combined 'THE TOP END' A smooth top end on sources is the key to improved definition without getting 'bright'or agressive. This is very hard to accomplish with modern active eq's. The PE1C features extended mid/hi boost ranging from 1 Khz to 16 Khz. Overall this smooth passive eq is equally suited to many jobs in the studio, from opening up vocals and guitars to eqalizing bass drums in the most exciting way. PE1C is NOT a dirty sounding tube equalizer, and so wasn't the Pultec. Classic well built Tube gear always featured extended frequency response and open sound. This is what can be achieved with well designed Tube Based Circuits ant it's the backbone of the TUBE-TECH sound.

Original Photos from 2004: Pultec Audio: Pultec EQP-1a DIY Notes: This is about as close as you can get to a real vintage Pultec EQP-1a. Built from the original Pulse Techniques with the designed around modern replacement parts (filter caps and trannys); and utilizing best practices regarding lead dress and component placement. Parts cost is around $1265 USD. I now offer a complete for $1645 that includes upgraded filter section capacitors, a new master layout and 500 high-resolution assembly photos. The Pultec's original Triad HS-56, HS-29 and Peerless S-217-D transformers would have been great, but sourcing them all is very difficult, primarily because of the rarity of the Peerless S-217-D output tranny.
As the Peerless is so exotic, I didn't really care about sourcing the input and interstage trannys because without the S-217-D, the point seemed moot. On the plus side, modern EQP-1a equivalents from have a much smaller footprint which facilitates a 2u rack chassis if desired - and the quality is artisan. For those inclined, the original Chicago PCC-55 power tranny does appear on eBay with some frequency and modest pricing. For the inductor, I chose Cinemag's Pultec replacement CML-150T. Power Transformer: Hammond 370BX: Universal primary, 55VA, 275-0-275 @ DC ma 50, 5VCT @ 2A, 6.3VCT @ 2A. Build notes: I separated the EQP-1a's amplifier section from the circuit by way of two separate turret boards. The amp section is on the rear panel.
This provided a nice way to route the filament wires in the upper corner of the rear of the chassis to keep things quiet as well as keeping the HT stuff away from the passive. One particularly interesting thing is that the 6x4 rectifier runs off the same 6.3V filament as the 12ax7 and 12au7 tubes, and the power transformer rectifier 5V winding only powers the lamp. I ended up moving the interstage and input transformers to the left of the bottom turret board and the inductor to the right side. I think there are 3 grounds points: One at the OT lug. One at the input XLR, and one at the power tranny. The Pultec works great and is very quiet.
I ran several sweeps and it's perfectly flat with the eq in and set flat. The eq curves look very accurate as well in all configurations, including gain.

In 2014, due to customer demand, Pulse Techniques brought back into production the 3U EQP-1A program EQ. Many of their clients prefer the look and layout of the larger unit to that of the 2U EQP-1A3 and the EQP-1A has become one of their most popular units.
Almost immediately after announcing the return of the EQP-1A, they started receiving requests for the Pultec EQP-1S 3U Program Equalizer, the 3U version of the Pultec EQP-1S3. For those not familiar with the (formerly) extremely-rare EQP-1S/EQP-1S3, these products have the same wide-bandwidth line amp as the EQP-1A/EQP-1A3 units, but have modified low-frequency boost/atten response curves, add 2 additional peak boost frequencies, and most-importantly add 2 high-frequency shelf boost curves to the sonic palette. Specifications. 30, 40, 70, 100 CPS shelf boost, 0 - 13.5 dB.
30, 40, 70, 100 CPS shelf attenuate, 0 - 17.5 dB. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 KCS peak boost, 0 - 18 dB;.
5, 10 KCS shelf boost, 0 - 14 dB. 5, 10, 20 KCS shelf attenuate, 0 - 16 dB. Input Impedance: 600 Ohms. Output Impedance: 50 Ohms. Noise: 92 dB below +10 dBm. Distortion: ≤ 0.15% at +10 dBm into 600 Ohms. Amplifier: Flat, 20 CPS to 20 KCS, +/- 0.5 dB.
